America.. Where's The Progress?

When discussing the gun issue that we have in America, I couldn't help but notice history repeating itself..

Lets go back to the 20th Century..

  • Until the 1920's, women had no right to vote in presidential elections.

  • Schools were not integrated until 1954. Several areas did not enforce this until years later though.

  • It wasn't until 1964 that the Civil Rights Act was passed that said no one should ever be discriminated against based off of their race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

  • Birth control was not approved for women to use until 1960.

To most sane Americans, these laws are nothing crazy or out of the ordinary. However, for some people in that time, these laws were outrageous and against everything they stood for and have ever known.  Many of them made sure to voice their opinions on the matter. These people were so stuck in their old thinking habits and made no effort to see the story from another point of view.

Does this look familiar to you?? The people shown above hated progressive ideas and are now the face of ignorance in the 21st century. People that wholeheartedly defend their position will always throw into the conversation outdated laws, religious views, personal opinions, and my favorites: words like communism and socialism. It's like a broken record. As you can see from the photos above, not much has changed. At the end of the day none of the above "counter arguments" matter and they do nothing for humanity as a whole. It is only a way for certain people to stay in their comfort zone. America isn't interested in your personal comfort zones, we are interested in progress towards a better tomorrow for EVERYONE.

Politically, I consider myself a Progressive Democrat.
"Progressives recognize problems and try to define and address the systemic rules, laws and traditions that enable and empower the problems in the first place. Additionally, Progressives share a general belief in the interconnections of individuals and the philosophy that “when you hurt, I hurt”." - the2020progressive.com

Keyword: Progressive. I believe in order to advance as a whole, we have to fix things that are broken so that it doesn't keep happening. We can't keep skirting around the issues.

Example 1: Liberals will pay for body cameras on Police. Progressives may like that idea, but they also want to address the  training the cops receive that necessitate the need for the cameras.

Example 2: Liberals will vote for a stimulus package. Progressives might too, but they’ll also plead for an investigation into why it’s needed, how it will be spent, and if the system will allow for the same problem to happen again.

Notice the difference? Instead of putting a band-aid over a huge problem, why not get to the core of the problem? This isn't rocket science folks.

We have to understand when certain customs do not work for us anymore i.e. lack of gun control, healthcare costs, money in politics, wages, etc. We need to realize when laws are outdated and need to be revisited. We need to hold politicians accountable. We have to look to other countries who may be doing it better than us and see where we can improve. A country can not succeed without progress. We can't continue to stay in the past, we have to go forward and find what works for the current climate that we are living in. If we do not do this, I believe this will be the ultimate collapse of America.

I look around at all of the people who get out and protest and make their voices heard.. these are the people that always change America for the better. All of the laws that were passed that so many of us take for granted, because we've never known anything different. The main irony is when some females choose to mock these protesters. These are the kind of women who marched for you in the 20th century. They are the ones who gave you a right to open your mouth, voice your opinion, to be able to vote, to have a career, to not have 10 kids that you can't afford, etc.. I could go on and on. It is the ones who sit idly by accepting whatever their political party throws at them that are the real fools. Back then and especially today, there are people who are constantly voting against their best interests.

I would encourage everyone to take a hard look at what beliefs you hold so tightly to and why. Are you holding onto a belief that negatively effects a large majority of the US population because the alternative scares you? Is there a belief you could let go of? Is there something that you could compromise more on?

Always try to be on the right side of history.

Future generations will thank you!
